Date: September 23, 2005 Project: Sonny Lubick Field at Hughes Stadium Renovation
FORT COLLINS, CO. – Hughes Stadium first opened in 1968 as a modern architectural marvel, taking advantage of new approaches in the use of concrete construction. Its renovation 35 years later blends the clean lines of the original stadium while enhancing the stadium’s exterior form with a play on the nearby Rocky Mountains. The $15.2 million renovation, designed by HOK Sport with local architect of record Aller Lingle Architects, will make its debut at the Rams’ home opener on September 24.
The renovation is a tribute to the original stadium’s design, relying predominantly on concrete with glass and metal accents. The stadium fits contextually to its surroundings with an earthy, natural feel. This unique setting provides views of the Front Range as well as the Rocky Mountains.
From the outside of the stadium, forms rise from the west exterior, nestled adjacent to the mountains just behind the stadium. These volumes – which enclose circulation and a new suite box, among others – provide movement and bring to life the activities of the stadium within.
While changes outside the stadium are readily apparent, what’s more evident are the additions to the inside. The designers’ main goal was to provide added fan comfort and functionality. Hughes Stadium now boasts 12 luxury suites – already sold out for the season – with a higher level of finish than what is normally seen at the collegiate level. The renovation added 420 new Ram’s Horn Club seats, 4,300 new north end-zone bench seats and new press and broadcast facilities. New score boards, a video board and an upgraded sound system enhance the game day atmosphere.
“The Rams will now have a game day experience that exemplifies the best in college football,” said project designer and HOK Sport principal Ben Stindt. “We get the loudest fans closer to the field with end zone seats, we give donors amenities unseen in other stadiums of this size via plush suites and club seating and now CSU can offer recruits a glimpse into a progressive football program.”
