New Lansdowne Road Stadium concept design unveiled

Lansdowne Road Stadium concept design

Date: October 17 2006 Project: Lansdowne Road

The concept design for the new Lansdowne Road Stadium in Dublin – the home to Irish Football and Rugby – has been revealed at a news conference in Ireland today.

Designed by HOK Sport the new Lansdowne Road Stadium is the first truly site responsive stadium of its kind anywhere in the world. Its form, mass, materials and aspect are defined by the site and its surrounds. A transparent shimmering form around the stadium falling off in the north minimises the impact on the adjoining neighbourhood. This spectacular design also affords glimpses of Dublin from within the arena connecting the experience with the city – unique to Lansdowne Road.

The stadium will accommodate 50,000 spectators, with four seating tiers on three sides all having superb unobstructed views of the pitch, enhancing the overall Lansdowne Road experience and atmosphere. The facilities planned for all levels of the stadium will enhance the experience. Lansdowne Road will embrace the very best of stadium technology and stadium hospitality.

Lansdowne Road Stadium has a long and proud tradition as a venue for exceptional sporting encounters. The new stadium will provide an international arena worthy of this past and ready to play host to an exciting future.

Commenting on today’s announcement, HOK Sport’s Senior Principal Rod Sheard said:

"The new Lansdowne Road Stadium is a design for the 21st Century, symbolising the positive future for sport in Ireland. It will be a sporting and entertainment venue that provides facilities and comfort levels comparable to the best in the world."

"The stadium has been designed to be distinctive and to complement its setting in the heart of the city, creating a national stadium which will be globally recognisable as the home of Irish Rugby and Football."

Commenting on the concept design, Christopher Lee, Design Principal on the project said:

“Reflecting the colour of the sky and light conditions, the building’s façade is ever changing. The undulating transparent form of the new Lansdowne Road Stadium is an ephemeral addition to the skyline of Dublin."

Design Statement: The new Lansdowne Road stadium is the first truly site responsive stadium of its kind anywhere in the world.

Its form, mass, materials and aspect are all defined by the site and its surrounds.

A shimmering form of transparent ‘shingles’ rises both in the east and west falling in the north to minimise the impact of the building on the adjoining neighbourhoods.

A transparent roof is lowered to the southern sky to maximise the sunlight and the high performance sports turf thus ensuring that the best possible playing surface is produced.

Reflecting the colours of the sky and the light conditions, the facade of the buildings will be ever changing. The overall undulating transparent form will be an ephemeral addition to the skyline of Dublin.

On three sides four seating tiers accommodate spectators in a wide range of seating types all with superb unobstructed views of the pitch, thus enhancing the overall Lansdowne experience and atmosphere.

On the north side the stadium sweeps down to one tier of seating in respect to the closeness of the local houses. In turn this affords glimpses of the city from within the arena thus connecting the intense spectator experience with the city – an experience that will be unique to Lansdowne Road.

And the facilities planned for all levels of the stadium will enhance that experience. Lansdowne will embrace the very best of stadium technology and stadium hospitality providing a total experience for everyone.

Lansdowne Road Stadium has a long and proud tradition as a venue for exceptional sporting encounters. The new stadium will provide an international arena worthy of this past and ready to play host to an exciting future.
