HOK Sport wins stadium for 2012 Olympic Games in London

Date: 17 October 2006

The international sports architects HOK Sport is part of the selected consortium Team McAlpine who are now in negotiations with the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) to design and construct the stadium to be used for the 2012 Olympic games and Paralympic games in London.

The consortium, which designed and built the new Emirates Stadium for Arsenal Football Club, is led by building contractors Sir Robert McAlpine Ltd, and also includes international engineering teams Buro Happold and M-E Engineers.

Rod Sheard, architect in charge of the project at HOK Sport comments "This is a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate how the flexibility of the modern stadium can be of benefit to the games, particularly the legacy it leaves to the city."

The 80,000 seat stadium to be used for track and field events as well as the opening and closing ceremonies will reduce in size to 25,000 seats after the games.

Sheard comments "By using new technologies that were not available to us when we designed Telstra Stadium for the Sydney games in 2000 we believe we can create a stadium that is more responsive to the changing needs of the modern Olympics. It could well become a model for the benefit of future bidding cities."

HOK Sport is working on stadium developments around the world including Lansdowne Road Stadium in Dublin, Taipei Superdome in Taiwan and the new Eden Park Stadium in Auckland for the 2011 Rugby World Cup.

* Telstra Stadium was formerly known as Stadium Australia.
