Date: February 11th 2008 Project: The O2 Arena
The O2 Arena, designed by HOK sport architecture, on Thursday night received two awards at the prestigious Pollstar Concert Industry Awards which took place at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. It beat a host of other venues to be voted both Best New Concert Venue and Best International Arena of the Year.
The awards honour the cream of the concert business for their 2007 accomplishments. Since opening just 7 months ago The O2 Arena has hosted some of the biggest live music acts around such as Justin Timberlake, Rolling Stones, Elton John, Bruce Springsteen, 8 nights of Take That, 17 nights of Spice Girls and the legendary Barbra Streisand plus gig of the decade - Led Zeppelin. Prince made The O2 his home during the summer to play 21 sold out nights in the arena which has already become the world’s highest grossing music arena.*
The O2 Arena truly creates a new benchmark in what both fan and performer can and should expect from a rock or pop concert in the UK.
John Barrow, Senior Principal HOK sport architecture commented, "The O2 Arena represents the future of arena design wherein the utmost flexibility of operation is delivered alongside the ultimate in spectator comfort. It employs simple, functional and flexible design principles to create a rewarding and memorable experience for spectators and participants."
