Date: March 10th 2008 Project: Southend United Football Club
HOK Sport, the architects for Southend United's new stadium at Fossett's Farm received good news on Thursday following a favourable decision at a Public Inquiry for the development of a 22,000 all-seater stadium, hotel and conference facilities, restaurant and enabling retail development.
The relocation to Fossett's Farm is born from the clubs need to renew their current ground with a new stadium which has an improved capacity and player/spectator facilities. Southend's ongoing success and current aspirations to compete in the Championship demand greater spectator capacity and quality. Moving to a new site will allow the club a relatively simple move between seasons and will allow the club to improve its surroundings as well as allowing them to liberate the existing site for improvement.
The site and stadium are to be shared with other commercial activity contributing to the vibrancy of the site. The stadium will embrace commercial activity in order to remain sustainable. Much work has been carried by the club in consultation with the community in advance of the commission.
Project architect, Mike Trice from HOK Sport comments "We are delighted with the decision and green light to go ahead with the new £50million stadium. The Public Inquiry process has knocked our programme but the club are keen to move into the new ground 2010 so we will need to mobilize quickly."
