HOK Sport's design philosophy of Heinz Field was based around two critical elements - the City of Pittsburgh and its people. The open south end of the stadium creates a connection between the stadium and downtown, maximising the game day experience.

The stadium's stone-like masonry was inspired by the stone and steel buildings that once defined the city's skyline. Heinz Field echoes Pittsburgh's rich heritage and the stadium's site ensures a strong connection between the city's urban character and one of its newest landmarks. The tapered steel columns that support the multi-story glass wall in Heinz Field are perforated with hexagons, a shape derived from the Steelers logo.
