Millennium Stadium was built for the 1999 Rugby World Cup on the site of the existing Cardiff Arms Park. Although one of the most famous sporting venues in the world, Cardiff Arms had no presence in the city, it was un-noticeable.

The new stadium was designed as an 'icon' and would kick start Cardiff's urban regeneration. It is the new home of the Welsh Rugby Union, and is now regarded as the best rugby stadium in the world.

The architectural priority was to retain the 'cauldron' atmosphere of Cardiff Arms Park, with a close, almost intimate connection between the players and the spectators. The stadium's vibrant red and green colour scheme is an expression of the growing pride of Wales.
