The design for the Surprise Recreation Complex was derived from the city's desires to incorporate a unified architectural theme into the project using a Mediterranean style of architecture. From this brief evolved the design of two book-end towers, which greet fans at the entry gate, setting the architectural statement for the complex.

The slightly curved roof creates a powerful image through its contrast with the sharp edged lines of the towers. 7.5 metre trellis-covered walkways offer spectators an uninterrupted view of the field and stands.
