The old Chicago Stadium had been a westside landmark for 65 years, but lacked modern amenities. The United Center is four times the size of the original, boasts three times the number of restrooms and twice the space for concessions. The Center's roof retains the old stadium’s vaulted shape to reflect noise back to the arena floor. To muffle unwanted sound during concerts, a portable sound-baffling system is used.

United Center’s exterior reflects a different era. Emulating its famed predecessor, the arena recreates the familiar buff-colored limestone using precast concrete.
