Phil Hofstra participates actively in both design education and practice. His 32 years of practice has taken place in both corporate and small firm settings. He was a partner in his own design firm and now directs the Design Studio for HOK Sport. The studio provides early project conceptualization by integrating technology, model building, animation and advanced graphics to communicate to clients and prospective client contingencies. Competitive efforts have been supported for projects in the market segments of NFL football, Major League Baseball, minor league baseball, NHL/NBA arenas, collegiate stadia and convention centers.

During his career, Phil has designed buildings and interiors ranging in size and use from an artist's studio to multimillion-square-foot office and commercial space. On behalf of the design community, he has been active in helping design professionals and legislators understand the ramifications of practice licensing regulations. As a continued educator/faculty member of the University of Kansas, he has taught studio courses at the graduate and undergraduate level in architecture and interior design, as well as seminars in special topics and directed readings in culture and design. In addition, he has recently passed the oral examinations for a PhD in American Studies, and is completing his dissertation on professionalization in design.
